On 10 December 2025, the teachers and students of the Department of Scandinavian Languages and Literatures, together with former colleagues, acquaintances, and friends, celebrated Associate Professor Ildikó Vaskó.
Ildikó Vaskó retired in May after four decades as a student, lecturer, and researcher at ELTE, and after serving as head of department between 2019 and 2025. Her colleagues honoured her career with a laudatio and a festschrift containing twelve studies in Hungarian and foreign languages, which will soon be uploaded among the department’s publications and to the Budapester Beiträge zur Germanistik series.
„Ildikó began her academic path as a student of French and English—with additional studies in Norwegian—at Eötvös Loránd University, which has remained both her alma mater and her academic home for the last forty years. Already in the 1990s she was a frequent visitor to Norway on study and research stays, which made her something of a mysterious grey eminence in absentia for the students of that time—a much sought-after scholar who seemingly resided permanently somewhere in the West, yet held a chair at the Department of Scandinavian Studies, or so the legend went.
The results of this long-standing cooperation were numerous: scholarly articles in Norwegian and English, conference presentations, and a wide range of scientific achievements. Under the supervision of esteemed linguists such as Ferenc Kiefer and Thorstein Fretheim, she successfully defended her PhD dissertation, Pragmatiske partikler i norsk og ungarsk, in 2000. In 2016 she earned her habilitation with a lecture aptly titled Jeg tenker, altså er jeg – Gondolkodom, tehát vagyok. Altså és nemlig, az ok-okozati viszony pragmatikai jelölői.
Throughout her career, Ildikó has maintained strong professional and personal ties both in Hungary and abroad. At our university she has led what one might call a hatchery of Norwegian, Hungarian, and English applied linguistics. For the last six years she has served as the head of our department, initiating bilateral programmes, supervising countless students at every academic level, and representing our institute with distinction at a variety of national and international fora.” (excerpt from the speech delivered at the event)
